Austin: Activities and Information

Austin's Town LakeAustin is the big surprise awaiting prospective business students. People outside Texas often picture much of the state as flat and dusty. But when they visit Austin they can't believe their eyes - thirty miles of urban hike-and-bike trails along scenic Town Lake and adjoining Barton Creek, landmark Barton Springs pool, 172 city parks, 26 golf courses, and nine wilderness areas offering quiet refuge in an area of approximately a million people. The moderate climate makes outdoor recreation a year-round venture. Nestled in the Texas Hill Country with its chain of lakes, ancient live oaks and cedars, Austin is simply one of the country's most enjoyable places to live.

In addition to its scenic beauty, laid-back atmosphere, and great sense of history, Austin has a highly educated population, a lively arts and music scene, and a booming economy. The city is bluebonnets and blues, high-tech and hill country, research and recreation.

The vibrant Austin economy houses companies ranging from established members of the Fortune 500 to start-up entrepreneurial ventures. The Texas Business school benefits from strong relationships with our local business community. They join us as research partners, recruiters, visiting lecturers, practicum sponsors and guest speakers.

Entertainment

A reputation as the "Live Music Capital of the World" means that Austin offers more than 120 music venues, on and off the historic Sixth Street entertainment corridor. On any given night, listeners can choose from a menu of rock, blues, jazz, Tejano, folk, country, and everything in between. Adding to its renown, Austin hosts the international South by Southwest (SXSW) music and multimedia festival each spring. The Frank Erwin Center, an arena that seats 18,000, features over 250 events each year ranging from rock concerts to circuses to Texas Longhorn basketball games.

The Arts

Austin also boasts local and touring theater companies and the world-renowned Austin Ballet and Austin Symphony which perform at UT Austin's Performing Arts Center - a diverse complex that ranks among the top five on any American campus. The visual arts are well represented with 35 art galleries and museums both on and off the UT campus, including the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum and Library.
