Admissions Prerequisites & Requirements

In addition to the general requirements for admission as a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin, the following items must be addressed prior to your enrollment for classes:

Bachelor's Degree: Applicant must have the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. The Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees from India and Pakistan are three-year programs and are not considered equivalent to the U.S. bachelor's degree.  If you hold one of these three-year degrees you are not eligible for admission to graduate school.  Partial completion of the master’s program will not make you eligible for our graduate programs. Applicants who hold Associate memberships with the Institute of Chartered Accountancy in addition to their bachelor’s degree are also eligible for graduate study at UT.  To obtain further clarification of this equivalency requirement please contact GIAC directly by phone at (512) 475-7391 or fax (512) 475-7395.

Work Experience: Students are strongly encouraged to have at least two years of full-time work experience. This does not include working as student assistant (Teaching Assistant, Lab Assistant, Grader, etc). A select number of applicants will be considered for admission as McCombs Scholars immediately after completing their undergraduate degree. These applicants must possess, among other criteria, exceptionally strong academic backgrounds, demonstrated leadership and a strong potential for success in business.

GMAT:  All applicants are required to submit official Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores from ETS. Texas has no minimum score, but GMATs are an extremely important component of each application. Candidates should address this application component aggressively. GMAT scores are valid for five years.  You are encouraged to take the GMAT early in your MBA application process so that if you do not perform as well as you would like, you have the ability to retake the exam prior to any deadlines.

Applications are not considered complete -- and will not be evaluated -- until official GMAT scores have arrived at UT. You may take the GMAT as often as you wish. Texas will only consider your highest score -- the Texas MBA does not average GMATs. (The GMAT score is valid for five years from the exam date.)

McCombs full-time MBA GMAT code: 396-44-45

English Language: Students whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency through acceptable TOEFL and GMAT (verbal) scores. (The TOEFL score is valid for two years from the exam date.) Applicants will be granted an automatic TOEFL waiver if they have earned an undergraduate degree in a country whose official language is English.

UT Austin TOEFL code: 6882

Pre-Enrollment Expectations

Laptop Computer: Students are required to purchase a standard model laptop computer as defined by the McCombs School of Business before they begin the program. Upon admission, laptop computer specifications will be made available to the student.

McCombs Orientation: Orientation takes place in August prior to the first day of class. This program provides crucial connection to the technology, community, and resources essential for an MBA student's success in the program. McCombs Orientation is mandatory for all new students without exception. Specifics are included in the admission packets and are updated on our web site.

Calculus: While not a criterion for admission, proficiency in calculus is expected of all MBA students. Proficiency can be obtained through various methods, such as a college calculus class, a community college class, or self study.

Spreadsheets: All students should be proficient in a computer spreadsheet program (i.e., Lotus 1-2-3, Excel, etc.)
