MBA Alumni Honored
The McCombs MBA Alumni (MMA) Network and the Graduate
Business Council hosted the 3rd Annual MBA Alumni Awards
Celebration at the Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel on
Friday, September 28, 2007. This annual event recognizes a
rising star alumnus/a and an outstanding chapter event.
Dean George Gau presented the Rising Star Award to Tony Rogers,
MBA ’97 and Vice President of Advertising at Wal-Mart. The award
criteria requires that the winning alumnus/a has graduated
within the past 10 years, demonstrated distinguished
professional success, and worked to strengthen the MMA Network.
Tony shared that he arrived at the Texas MBA program with the
goal of switching to a marketing career. He attributes much of
his success to his relationship with Professor Leigh McAlister.
“To Dr. McAlister’s detriment, but to my great benefit,” Tony
joked, “I became her shadow and teaching assistant.”
Dean Gau thanked Tony for his role in Wal-Mart’s decision to
select McCombs as a core recruiting school. To this Tony
remarked that McCombs MBAs have a “humbleness and practicality
that I don’t see at other top schools... McCombs MBAs can just
as easily talk to the route driver as the CEO.”
Associate Dean Eric Hirst presented the Outstanding Chapter
Event Award to New York’s Faculty Speaker Series. Holly
Goodrich, MBA ’04 and Chapter Co-President, accepted awards for
herself and Lili Fan, MBA ’05 and Chapter Events Chair, who was
not able to attend. Holly thanked Professor Sheridan Titman, who
was in attendance and Professor Andres Almazan in absentia. “We
could not have done it without them and appreciate their
involvement.”
Dean Hirst also acknowledged the phenomenal growth the New York
Chapter has experienced under the current leadership with
efforts such as establishing a formal board, increasing personal
outreach efforts, and joining the New York Business Schools’
Club.
