June 18 Austin McCombs MBA Book Club

The McCombs MBA Book Club will introduce you to new and interesting business-related books (no, really, they’re out there!) and allow you to catch up with friends and meet new alumni in a relaxed setting.  Our first meeting will be June 18, 2008. We’ll discuss how often to meet, which books we’ll read, and other “rules of the road."

Contact Cheryl Niehaus (cdn559@hotmail.com) if you’re interested in joining us.  Let Cheryl know which of the following books you would prefer to read for the first meeting or feel free to suggest other titles!

Leaving Microsoft to Change the World: An Entrepreneur’s Odyssey to Educate the World’s Children
by John Wood

As described on Amazon.com:
"John Wood discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life's work--not at business school or leading Microsoft's charge into Asia in the 1990s--but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. Wood felt trapped between an all-consuming career and a desire to do something lasting and significant. Stressed from the demands of his job, he took a vacation trekking in Nepal.

Leaving Microsoft to Change the World chronicles John Wood's struggle to find a meaningful outlet for his managerial talents and entrepreneurial zeal. For every high-achiever who has ever wondered what life might be like giving back, Wood offers a vivid, emotional, and absorbing tale of how to take the lessons learned at a hard-charging company like Microsoft and apply them to one of the world's most pressing problems: the lack of basic literacy."

What They Don't Teach You At Harvard Business School: Notes From A Street-Smart Executive
by Mark H. McCormack

From the back cover, as featured on Amazon.com:
"From one of the most successful entrepreneurs in American business, comes a straight-talking must-read for executives at every level.  Based on his proven method of applied people sense to get things done, with key chapters on reading people and yourself, sales, negotiation, and executive time management, he presents powerful street-smart insights into:

The Secret Life of a Deal * Management Philosophies That Don’t Work (And One That Does) * How To Run a Meeting and How To Attend One * The Positive Use of Negative Reinforcement * What Are You Doing Here (And What Do Others Think You’re Doing)? * Observing Aggressively * Don’t Deal In Round Numbers * Taking The Edge * And Much More"
