Texas Legislature Deregulates Tuition
After weeks of political wrangling between the House and the Senate, a tuition deregulation bill passed Sunday that will begin to affect the University next spring. The vote marks a sea-change in funding for public institutions of higher education in Texas.

Mind your own Business: Small business owners get a crash course in management form McCombs faculty
For $250, small business owners in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin can take a seven-week, 45-hour, evening course that covers everything from business planning and financial management to marketing strategy and accounting. The classes are taught by the same award-winning faculty at the McCombs School who teach MBA students and are made possible by the funding of corporations such as HEB, Southwest Airlines, Guaranty Bank and Bank of America.  Testimonials from former CMBA students such as businesswoman Pat Flanary vividly illustrate the potential of the CMBA program to change students’ lives.

Mulva, Watkins spoke at Commencement Ceremonies
James J. Mulva, president and CEO of ConocoPhillips, and Sherron Watkins, the former Enron vice president who helped expose Enron's ethical lapses, addressed students at this year's annual commencement ceremonies. Both Mulva and Watkins are graduates of the McCombs School.

Joseph Wells: Fraud Buster Shares Tips of Trade
Sunday's American-Statesman included a feature-length profile of McCombs Accounting Lecturer Joseph Wells, a former auditor and ex-FBI agent who has gained international renown for developing a certification program for fraud detection. Today, his Austin-based Association of Certified Fraud Examiners claims some 28,000 members in 120 countries. In 15 years, his course that teaches auditors, accountants and law enforcement agents how to detect and stop economic crime has become the accounting industry's standard.

Public Companies May Benefit from Auditor-Provided Tax Services
A newly released study by McCombs Accounting Professor William Kinney and two colleagues presents empirical evidence of an association between tax services and public company restatements. Their research suggests that contrary to much current conventional wisdom, tax services provided by audit firms to their clients may actually improve the quality of the public company audit.

Konana Elected to Academy of Distinguished Teachers
The university has selected Prabhudev Konana of the MSIS Department as one of seven new faculty members in UT's Academy of Distinguished Teachers. The academy recognizes teaching excellence, particularly at the undergraduate level. Konana is the seventh McCombs professor honored with inclusion, joining Robert Prentice, Steve Salbu, Michael Granof, Jay Koehler, Anitesh Barua and Ross Jennings.

Jack Furst Named Outstanding Young Texas Ex
In May, the Texas Exes conferred the Outstanding Young Texas Ex award on four deserving alumni, including one of the McCombs School's strongest supporters and most successful young graduates, Jack Furst, MBA 84.
