MBA/Master of Arts in Asian Studies

The MBA/Master of Arts in Asian Studies program combines advanced business studies with interdisciplinary area studies and language, responding to an increased need in both public and private sectors for business specialists with a thorough understanding of Asian politics and cultures.

Students spend their first year in the program taking Asian Studies courses and the second year taking graduate business courses. The third year is a combination of both disciplines.

Degree Requirements

Students complete 76-79 hours of course work:

  • 28 hours of MBA core courses
  • 18 hours of approved business electives
  • 6 upper-division or graduate hours of Asian Studies history courses
  • 6 hours in advanced language courses (third-year level or beyond)
  • 6 hours of Asian Studies electives with at least 50% business content
PLUS
  • 6 hours of non-business Asian Studies electives and 6 hours of Asian Studies Master’s Thesis
OR
  • 12 hours of non-business Asian Studies electives and 3 hours of Asian Studies Master’s Report

Note: If students have fulfilled history and/or language requirements at the time of admission to the program, they may substitute electives for these courses. The Asian history and Asian language courses must be in the history and language of the region in which the student is specializing.

Language Requirements

Students must have completed at least one year of college level study of an Asian language with a grade of B or higher - or have equivalent proficiency - before enrolling in the program. Upon completion of the program, students are expected to possess proficiency in an Asian language (ordinarily Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Malayalam or other language with the approval of the Asian Graduate Studies Committee) equal to three years of course work. The program encourages Dual Degree students to achieve a proficient level as early as possible.

The Dual Degree code for this program is 6 12200 and should be referenced when applying to the program. Please note that a minimum of two years of full-time work experience is required for admission to the MBA program.
